Frugal Life: How To Save Pt 1 - The Basics

A lot of people don't know this about me, but I am super frugal. I find deals every single day of the week and spend half, if not less, than the average person. By saving on the necessities, I can afford other things. Like clothes and makeup and cool new music equipment.

Being frugal isn't just about buying on sale, there is so much more involved, so much more money to be saved. Here are the basics (with photos of today's ads as examples):

#1 - First you need to change your way of thinking.

  • You can't be a brand snob. There is no shame in saving money, so get off your high horse already. You're shopping for deals, not a name, so open yourself to change and try new products. You may just find something you love.
  • Frugality isn't about finding deals every now and then, it's about finding deals all the time. You need to make the conscious decision to save money on everything you possibly can. A dollar off this item, a dollar off that item... it all adds up at the end of the day.
  • It's not as complicated as it seems sometimes. If you can do basic math, you can do this. Don't be discouraged by all the numbers.

#2 - Know the weekly sales.

Check out store flyers at the start of every week to spot the sales. This is how you'll plan your meals for the week, where/when to stock up on other supplies, etc. Be sure to take note of product size in relation to sale price. This is the first thing I do every Sunday morning.

Tip: If you don't have a rewards card for your local grocers and drugstores, you're missing out! Take the extra minute to register so you can get the best prices possible.

Tip: I like to snap photos of specific items with my phone to keep my ideas fresh later in the week when deciding what to eat. Visuals help me remember the deals. Find a method that helps you stay on top of the latest sales- we all think differently, so my technique may not work for you.

Some vegetarian/vegan products aren't exactly cheap, so I try to stock up when I can.

Tip: Take advantage of giveaways and other special offers. If you look for them, you'll realize there is a lot of free stuff just waiting to be given away.

#3 - Clip coupons.

If you don't already get the Sunday paper, consider buying it and/or collecting the inserts from someone who does. The more coupons you get, the more money you can save. (Simple concept, no?)

You can find all sorts of cool coupons in these inserts to use in your daily life. Clip and organize them so they're ready when you need them. I stash mine in a wallet sized accordion-style file folder. Some couponers are more excessive, hauling huge binders with them... I don't deem that necessary, but then again, I'm not shopping for an army.

You can also find printable coupons online, request free samples (companies usually send coupons too), download coupon apps to your phone, etc.

Tip: Some states get higher value coupons that others don't. Do your research, and if you have friends or family in those states, see if they can send you some. For the more serious saver, there are coupon swapping groups online that could help you get those better deals!

#4 - Mix coupons with sales.

Find the best sales and use your coupons. Typically, you can only use one store coupon and one manufacturer coupon per item.

Tip: Know what you're going to buy before you go to the store. I can't stress this enough. This way you can calculate exactly what you're going to spend before you do it, and will be less prone to buying whatever looks good to you at the time.

Tip: Some stores double your coupons! Be knowledgeable about store sales and coupon policies to get the best savings. And always check the employee as he/she is ringing up your items, as there is always room for error- pay attention to avoid mishaps.

#5 - Track your savings.

You should consider recording your purchases and savings so over time, you can predict sale trends and the best times to buy specific items. You can learn a lot by keeping track of your numbers, whether it be digital or in a notebook.

Do you have any frugal shopping tips to share? Where do you find the best deals?

Super Sephora Savings!

Yesterday I absolutely had to go back to Sephora to buy the Kat Von D Saint eau de parfum spray, since I saw it advertised on clearance for $15 (originally $45) the other day, and I couldn't resist. Turns out, it was actually $13. Awesome!

Plus I redeemed a free sample of Ole Henriksen Perfect Truth CC Cream, and received my new shiny VIB card, and a welcome kit with free passes for...

- 10% off a purchase
- complimentary makeover
- free shipping on an online order

Very cool! I can't wait to use them and see what else the VIB program has to offer.

Are you a bargain shopper or do you pay full price?

Sunday Sephora Haul!

Today I picked up a bunch of goodies at Sephora, and for a great price!

What I bought:
Kat Von D Sinner eau de parfum rollerball (sale $5, originally $18)
Kat Von D Lock-It Tattoo Concealer in light 18 - for Gary ($25)

My early birthday gift:

Some of these products are things I already use, and others I'm trying for the first time. I can't wait to test and review the new ones! I'm most excited about the Mist & Fix (still looking for that perfect makeup setting spray for winter) and Benefit highlighter.

I'm thrilled about this haul because it only cost me $65.97 before tax- I saved $30.53 (that's 32%!) and got 2 free minis. Go me!

Have you bought any new beauty products lately?

Frugal Life: New Beauty Loot!

*This post contains affiliate links.*

I just got back from Sephora, with some cool new goodies!

My purpose of going was to pick up more Smashbox Photo Finish foundation primer ($36), but then I saw Nails Inc. Special Effects nail polish in cheyne walk on clearance for $2, and I got a free trial size of Urban Decay Anti-Aging Eyeshadow Primer Potion!

That's how I roll, yo.

I have not yet tried the nail polish or the eye primer, but I've heard many good things, and can't wait to test them out!

The Smashbox foundation primer is one of those tried-and-true items I just can't live without. It smooths my skin and makes my makeup stay put all day long. And it's super lightweight! Worth every damn penny, I tell you.

Some of you may want to argue this post not worthy of  the frugal life tag, because I just spent thirty-six fucking dollars on foundation primer. Eat shit, okay? I saved $7.51 on the nail polish, and got the eye primer FREE. The price of pro quality doesn't get much better than this.

Have you tried any of these products? What do you think of them?

Frugal Life: Sweater Shopping!

Yesterday, now that Monday is my day off work, I went shopping at the local mall for warm clothing so I don't have to worry about being cold this winter...

Do you know how hard it is right now to find decent sweaters?? I only came home with two!

Here they are, the two I bought... (Pardon the filthy dressing room mirror...I don't think the people at Burlington cleaned it in a while.)

These crosses don't make me look religious, right? ~ t/o sweaters
Gotta love a nice deep V neck. ~ Sweater by Poof.

I also thought this midriff baring sweater was pretty cool, but not exactly meant for super cold weather, nor do I have the proper underpinnings for it.. But I love the 90s look! I can see myself wearing it with olive cargo pants and combat boots. I kind of regret not getting it, but not enough to go back and find it again.

I have a vision of 90's industrial rock in my head..

I also picked up a couple of $5 scarves (originally $12.99) at Charlotte Russe. This is one of them.

I immediately fell in love with this scarf- it's huge and warm like a blanket. ~ Charlotte Russe

Other items include a Bazinga! tshirt I got for $10 (originally $20), and later, a Red Baron cheese pizza for $3.34 (originally $6.39, thats 47% savings).

I love bargain hunting, and always feel very accomplished when I find a bunch of stuff I like.

Have you gone shopping lately? What did you buy?

New Bearpaw Boots!

*This post contains affiliate links.*

Yesterday I went shopping for winter boots, and after checking out the measly collection every store in the local mall had to offer, I finally settled on the Bearpaws in Emma, black at The Shoe Dept.

Oops, I got my water bottle in the shot! **Drink lots of water every day for clear, healthy skin.**

They were on sale for $55 (originally $75), which satisfied the more frugal side of me, while still guaranteeing quality. I tend to beat the shit out of my shoes, and need something that's going to last all winter, and preferably longer if possible.

I will probably never be able to afford Uggs, and in all honesty, I think they are far too Ugg-ly to be that expensive... I'm happy with the Bearpaws.

Now I won't have to worry about cold feet this winter, or being uncomfortable!

What will YOU be wearing this winter? Share your link!
Also, I'm on the lookout for some blogging BFFs...

Review: Rimmel London Stay Matte Liquid Mousse Foundation

rimmel london stay matte liquid mousse foundation - influenster - shine has met its matte
Thanks to Rimmel and Influenster, I recently received the new Rimmel London Stay Matte Liquid Mousse Foundation, expected to hit stores in January 2014!

I'm weary when it comes to drugstore brands, but I tried it... and was AMAZED!

It is a very lightweight, full coverage, buildable foundation. (I am so impressed with the coverage!) And it works wonders for my skin in this colder, dryer weather. Creamy and very pigmented, not at all chalky!

Once I am done with this bottle of AMAZING, I fully intend to buy more. Fortunately, a little goes a long way, so I won't be running out before it hits stores two months from now...

And even better-
Rimmel London is SUPER AFFORDABLE! Perfect for beauties on a budget!

It even looks beautiful in harsh lighting!

Frugal Life: OMG Shoes!

Charlotte Russe black platform wedge braided strap sandalsToday I took a little time to check out the clearance sales at Charlotte Russe. After trying on a couple pairs of boots (they didn't fit my legs at all), and perusing the sale shelves, I saw this pair of high-as-fuck wedge sandals hidden behind some other shoes.

I immediately took them off the shelf, tried them on, and fell in love.

Then I checked the price tag- only $14.99!

It's hard to tell from the angle I took these photos with my phone, but this is a 6 inch wedge heel. (That means I'm 6'4" with these on! Scary, right?) They make me feel like a gorgeous runway model when I have them on, and I think $15 is a total steal for such a confidence booster. Every woman should have at least one pair of great shoes that makes her feel beautiful.

What I bought:
Charlotte Russe wedge heel sandals - $14.99
(originally $35.50)

Total after tax:
$15.59

Frugal Life - A Bargain And A Free Sample

*This post contains affiliate links.*

Today I went shopping for more MicroSmooth face powder at Sephora (I ran out the other day, and my makeup just hasn't been the same!), and traded in some of my points to try the Murad Oil-Control Mattifier.

I'm excited to try this moisturizer. I have oily problem skin and it's so hard to find the right products to keep me matte and natural looking. I've heard good things about this stuff, and you can expect me to test and review it here soon.

At Sephora, I Bought:
Murad Oil-Control Mattifier = free sample

Total After Tax:
$23.76

I know, I know, a lot of you frugal people are probably cussing me out because I bought a $22 face powder. But I think it's good to splurge on the items you can't live without. I have yet to find a better powder for my skin type, so I deem it necessary. Plus, I'm getting a free sample, too.

Then I did a little shopping at Burlington, in which I hovered in the shoe department for about 20 minutes looking for boots, which I did not find a pair I liked that fit. Then I browsed the clothing racks a little and found an outfit to try on.

outfit of the day ootd shopping trip hazelnut blue spice jeans
I don't like the sweater, but the skinny jeans are GREAT!

Cute, but I wasn't digging the sweater. It looked good on me and was very soft, but I didn't like the way it squeezed my hips and biceps. I don't like feeling restrained in areas that are supposed to move.

But the pants were great, and I love the hazelnut color and fancy button and grommets.

Blue Spice hazelnut skinny jeans
Crotch shot! LOL Seriously though, I love the button.

At Burlington, I Bought:
Blue Spice skinny jeans = $10.98 (reg price $30)

Total After Tax:
$11.42

All that for less than $40. I feel accomplished, and a little proud of myself.

Introducing: Frugal Life

Frugal rhymes with Bugle(s). Yum!
Sundays are when I tend to do most of my drugstore shopping (for razors, shower stuff, hair care, deodorant, cheap makeup deals, etc), and I'm frugal as fuck.

Granted, I'm not an extreme couponer, but by mixing coupons and sales, and bonus packs when possible, I save a LOT of money. And that, my friends, is my secret to affording some of the finer things in life - be frugal as fuck.

I think, by blogging my receipts, I will be able to track my spending habits better, as well as get a feel for trends in sales. I can share some of my coupon strategies with you guys from time to time as well.

Just check out the frugal life tag for my latest shopping updates.

Today the BF and I grabbed a small breakfast at McDonald's (we never eat there, but I had coupons- read on) before going to Walgreens for some personal care supplies. He's very pleasant to shop with BTW, I handle the numbers and he carries the shit for me.

At McDonald's, we had:
2 breakfast sandwiches - BOGO coupon
2 large iced coffees - BOGO coupon

Total after tax:
$6.13
That's 50% savings.

I can't imagine paying full price for the sandwiches. The coffees, yes.
With the coupons, it was worth it.

At Walgreens, I bought:
2 Speed Stick - BOGO sale + $1 off 2 coupon
Gillette disposable razors bonus pack - $3 off coupon
Rimmel Lasting Finish Lipstick in 113 - $1 off coupon

Total after tax:
$17.43
I saved $8.29 (34%)

This wasn't the most I've saved on a shopping trip (I think the best was 89% at Walgreens and 74% at Weis), but not bad. I feel accomplished. And I get to try out a new lipstick, which really wasn't on the shopping list in the first place...

Are you a couponer? What things have you saved on recently?
